Nestlé Waters North America (Nestlé Waters) has been providing high quality healthful beverages since 1978. The demand for bottled water has experienced rapid growth during the last decade, due largely to health-minded and on-the-go people switching from sugared sodas and sports drinks to water. With broad and rising national demand for its beverages, and Nestlé Waters’ commitment to efficiency and resource responsibility, Nestlé Waters has sought ways to operate that are more sustainable economically and environmentally. One way to significantly reduce its carbon footprint is to regionalize its water sources and bottling plants. The closer the water sources and bottling plants are to the consumer, the less energy and smaller carbon footprint is required to provide the same product. Therefore, Nestlé Waters has sought to strategically regionalize its water sources and bottling plants in locations that optimize transportation impacts with market demands.

Nestlé Waters produces two types of bottled water, “spring” and “purified”. Spring water, bottled for brands like Arrowhead, is obtained from protected natural springs, and requires only minor treatment prior to bottling. Purified water, labeled Nestlé Pure Life Purified Water (NPL), is obtained from municipal supplies or private wells and is purified through a specialized process to create a consistent high-quality product.

Recognizing the demand for Nestlé’s bottled water in the Rocky Mountain region and distant sources of bottled product, Nestlé opened a bottling line for NPL in Denver 2007. Prior to harvesting water from the Ruby Mountain Springs in Chaffee County, Nestlé Waters transported all of its bottled Arrowhead Brand Spring Water to the Rocky Mountain region from southern California. Bottling Arrowhead Brand Spring Water from the Ruby Mountain Springs at the Denver Plant allowed Nestlé Waters to reduce truck miles, fuel consumption, carbon emissions, and cost, and provided additional jobs for Colorado.

Nestlé Waters has been closely monitoring the quality and flows of the Ruby Mountain Springs and the source aquifer since May 2007. The data demonstrate that the Ruby Mountain Springs are an abundant and high-quality water source that can be carefully managed to sustainably harvest spring water with no effect on the aquifer, habitat, other water users, or the adjacent Arkansas River.
